Comparison

Align vs Otter.ai

Otter is an AI notetaker: it joins your calls, transcribes them and gives you a summary afterwards. Align is a meeting room: the call happens on a shared board, and Align pins the ideas, decisions and tasks onto it while you talk. They solve different problems, and plenty of teams will want both.

The difference in one sentence

Otter tells you what happened in a meeting afterwards. Align shows the decisions and tasks on the board while the meeting is still going.

A notetaker is passive by design: it listens, and the value shows up afterwards as a transcript and a summary. That's exactly right for most meetings. In an Align room everyone sees the ideas, the decision and the owners land on the board as they're said, so a vague "let's sync again next week" is visible while there's still time to fix it.

When Otter is the better choice

  • You want every meeting captured automatically: standups, 1:1s, customer calls, interviews.
  • Your meetings happen in Zoom, Google Meet or Teams and need to stay there.
  • Sales or customer teams who need notes pushed into a CRM like Salesforce or HubSpot.
  • You mainly need searchable transcripts, not a decision.

When Align is the better choice

  • Planning calls, go/no-go calls, design reviews, retros and brainstorms — meetings that should leave with decisions and owners.
  • Recurring meetings that deserve a place: the board and past recaps are still in the room next week.
  • Engineering teams who want the tasks in Linear or Jira, linked to the call, and closed when the PR merges.
  • Discussions that depend on documents: drop the file on the board and Align answers from it.

Using both

They don't compete for the same meetings. Keep a notetaker on the calls you just want on record, and run the meetings that need decisions and tasks in an Align room.

Frequently asked questions

Is Align an Otter.ai alternative?

For the meetings you run in an Align room, yes: you get the notes, the decisions, the tasks and an emailed recap. For capturing every meeting across Zoom, Meet and Teams, Otter does a different job and many teams will keep it.

Does Align join my Zoom or Google Meet call like Otter does?

No bot joins. Align rooms run in the browser: you start one and share the link. For calls that stay on Meet, Teams or Zoom, the Align extension takes live notes from the captions.

Does Align transcribe meetings too?

Yes, but the main output is the board — ideas, decisions and who does what — plus the recap emailed to everyone afterwards. Audio and video are only recorded if someone turns recording on in the room.
